Welcome to Year 3/4 2014/15

Welcome to a new year at Pennycross. I hope that you had a lovely summer and are well rested and ready to jump back into learning in this new academic year. I am looking forward to getting to know you and working together so that we have an exciting and productive year. I hope that you enjoy the new challenges and opportunities that this year has to offer.

It is very important that everyone is wearing the correct clothing. Remember that trainers are not part of our new uniform and shoes should be worn. If you are concerned that your shoes may get scuffed at break times, you may bring in a pair of trainers to change in to.

Please label all uniform.

This term our topic will be World War 1. We will be learning about why it began and what happened using a timeline. We will look at recruitment and propaganda, alongside home life during the war. The role of women and children during the war will also be looked at in detail. We will focus on tactics of warfare, the use of trenches and how airships and machines were used. We will finish off by looking at the Armistice, Treaties, Peace and Remembrance Day. We will then reflect on how life changed.

We will also be linking lots of our other subjects to this topic.

Please immerse yourselves in the topic at home and share anything that catches your attention.

Horrible Histories will be a good resource to use!

Each class has an allotted time for PE each week, but please ensure that PE kits are in school every day in case there is an opportunity for extra lessons. Children should wear a white t-shirt, black or navy shorts and trainers or plimsolls.

We are ever more in the public eye when representing our school. Everybody wearing matching correct kit looks fantastic!

Homework is set on a Friday and is expected to be handed in the following Wednesday.

If your child needs any help, just ask. Encourage your child to challenge themselves with their homework and to present it neatly with imagination.

Mr Hogden, Miss Williams and Miss Lydon.

We have been learning all about World War One.

Through our TFW sessions we have learnt about the unknown soldier. We have read and retold the Letter to an Unknown Soldier by Joanna Lumley using story telling. We created our own letter maps, wrote our own letters in a similar style and used silouette to perform them.
