Active Travel
Big Pedal 2021
Active and sustainable travel are part of the ethos of Pennycross Primary School.
We are committed to healthy journeys to school and reducing congestion at the school gate.
On this page you will see some examples of how we are working as a school community to promote and encourage active and sustainable travel.
Sustrans Plymouth Newsletter 22.03.21
We all know that walking to school has many positive benefits. We also recognise that for many families, travelling to school by car is unavoidable; they live far from school or need to drop children off on their way to work.
Park and stride is a fantastic compromise that encourages active travel.
Please open and print off the Pennycross map.
It clearly shows distances for park and stride.
The stars on the map are the locations of car parks that parents have permission to use for morning drop offs.
St Pancras Church car Park and Pennycross Sports and Social Club car park.
Plymouth Active Travel Awards
Thanks to our Bike Maintenance Crew for building our attendance bikes!

Wow! We won a visit from Sustrans Santa on his bike!

Regional Award for Active Travel

We attended the prestigious @ModeshiftSTARS awards ceremony in Bristol. Modeshift STARS is the national schools awards scheme that has been established to recognise schools that have demonstrated excellence in supporting cycling, walking and other forms of sustainable travel.
We were awarded best school in Plymouth and then were honoured to receive the award for school of the south-west!
We are very proud of our school community and the efforts we all make towards active travel. Watch this space for our exciting next steps! 😁
Many thanks Ryan and Tessa.
We achieved the ModeshiftSTARS Gold Award!

Some fantastic news from Pennycross Primary School.
We have been awarded the Gold Award from ModeShift Active travel awards. The only school in Plymouth to achieve this!
(Active travel is any form of travel to school that does not rely solely on a car).
We are also only one of two schools in the country that have been awarded the Gold Award on our first application. Normally you must achieve bronze, then silver and then Gold!
This is a big deal! To achieve this we had to complete a strict application, meet with an assessor and evidence the numerous incentives that we run to promote and engage pupils in active travel.
We are using WOW Tracker

WOW Tracker allows pupils to track how they travel to school each day. For actively travelling to school pupils can earn awesome badges!
Check out the map above. The circle shows approximate distances for Park & Stride. The stars are local car parks that have granted us permission to use them.
St Pancras Church and Pennycross Sports and Social Club.
We have our own bike hire scheme
