Military Kids Club Heroes

Welcome to our MKC Heroes page! We currently have 19 pupils on our MKC Heroes register. Due to the pandemic,  we are currently unable to run a mixed year group club on  a Monday after school.  However Mrs Hughes our MKC Heroes Lead in school is  coming into school an extra day each term to meet with individual family groups and/or class group bubbles of MKC Heroes throughout that dedicated extra day each term.  We have already had our first session  this term which has gone very well.       Children do not need to attend if they do not want to.  The activities will still vary and may either/or  include crafts, reading, talk time, colouring in, lego, board games and anything else the children would like to do.  This will all be implemented under current Covid 19 safety guidelines.

Pending future outcomes this year with the pandemic, will dictate whether we will be able to continue with our MKC Heroes trips and outings that the children love to go on.

Please scroll down to see some of the things our MKC Heroes have done in the past  and some of the amazing places we have been to.   Enjoy!

On Friday 22nd June our MKC Heroes had their summer trip to Paignton Zoo. Looking at the pictures below it seemed a very interesting visit for them all.
This year our MKC Heroes voted on having a Bowling Christmas Party, so on Wednesday 6th December we all went along to enjoy a nice meal and a couple of games of bowling at the Barbican Leisure Park. Have a look at some of the photographs we took on the day

Remembrance Assembly Monday 13th November 2017

We were very lucky to have Mr Elliott talk to us about his time in the Navy during World War 2 and his time on HMS Warspite. Here you can see a picture of him wearing his medals

On Friday 3rd November we took a number of our MKC Heroes to see the beautiful "Poppy Wave" display on the Hoe. We had to cancel a previous date due to Storm Ophelia, but this time we were so lucky as the weather was glorious. We held our Remembrance Assembly in school on Monday 13th November and were able to include some of the photographs and read out our feelings.
On Monday 17th July we took most of our MKC Heroes and some Young Carers for a trip to Woodlands. They had a fab time. Hope you enjoy looking at the photographs below. Some of the children were really tired and had a little nap on the coach on the way home as you can see.

National Marine Aquarium science workshop with MKC Heroes and Young Carers

On the 27th March we held an Easter Craft session and afternoon tea for   our MKC Heroes and families. They made some wonderful things as you can see from the pictures below
On Thursday 1st December 11 of our MKC Heroes went along to Jump for their Christmas Party. Looking at the pictures below you can see they all had a great time.

Our MKC Heroes were very lucky to have a visit from the Lord Mayor and her consort. They enjoyed talking to the children and joining in with the activities on offer.

On Tuesday 1st November 11 of our MKC Heroes visited Ford Park

Cemetery and placed roses on the graves of service personnel. They learnt about 2 soldiers who were in the Battle of the Somme which ties in nicely with our Remembrance Day Service.

Here are some photographs of our MKC Heroes putting together poppies to sell to the children and staff in school.
In the MKC Heroes club this week the children enjoyed producing these beautiful crosses which will soon be sent to Corsham School and planted in the MKC Heroes national plot at the garden of remembrance in Royal Wootton Bassett.

For their end of term treat the MKC Heroes were taken to the Aquarium for the day.

Photos will appear here soon

On the 30th June we had another lovely afternoon with our MKC Heroes and their families by holding another music session led by Plymouth Music Zone. This was followed by a delicious afternoon tea. I think the pictures below show how much everyone enjoyed it.
These two lucky HMS Heroes children were chosen to represent Pennycross Primary when we were invited to spend the day with the Royal Navy on HMS Ocean. I'm sure you can see by the photos below that they had a very enjoyable time .
All the HMS Heroes in Plymouth were asked to contribute an A4 size greeting to put in a book to send to the Queen for her 90th Birthday. Below is a picture of our contribution from Pennycross HMS Heroes. Isn't it nice .

Two children from our service families attended the Mayor's parlour recently. They were fantastic ambassadors for Pennycross Primary School.

The Music Zone has returned to Pennycross and Shane has been busy showing the HMS Heroes the fun they can have through music. Enjoy viewing the pictures below
All our HMS Heroes had a really good trip to Tenpin Bowling for their Christmas Party on Thursday December 3rd. Unfortunately, we had a bit of a wait for the coach to arrive to take us back to school.
The music Zone came in to do a taster workshop for our KS1 and KS2 HMS Heroes and will be coming back again in the new year to complete some more workshops with them.
Some of our children went to a local garden centre to choose some flowers to plant in their special garden outside the main entrance. The plants they chose were various red, blue and white ones.
On November 11th we invited our Mums, Dads and Grandparents into school to watch our Remembrance assembly.  They had tea, coffee and biscuits before joining us in the hall. Cathy from SSAFA also came along to give a little talk to the parents.

In the summer term we took all of our HMS Heroes to The Donkey Sanctuary in Gunnislake. See the pictures below

The KS1 children of our service families have enjoyed a wonderful day out at Jump, they had a great time.

We all enjoyed the session Karl and Shane from the Music Zone came in to deliver followed by afternoon tea. Everyone enjoyed it so much that we will be repeating it again next year and hope to have the Music  Zone in to work with the children in their Heroes club.

A new initiative has been launched to encourage service families with children to read together and make a scrapbook about it, it is called Reading Force and you can visit the website to find out all about it.

Our service families gathered together in school on Friday 31st January, for the very first time. Refreshments were also on offer and were well appreciated by the families who attended. A speaker from HIVE also attended to inform families about what HIVE does. The event was considered to be huge success and the next will follow in the summer term.
